Scientists from a British-Mexican team from a Liverpool University are currently investigating claims that impressions found in volcanic ash in southern Mexico, are actually human footprints.
Originally carbon dated to 40,000 years old, the ash has since been argon dated and found to be 1.3 million years old, which actually predates the first known Homo Sapiens in Africa, by more than a million years.
A scientist from a Texas University said that this new information puts doubt on the claims that the impressions are human footprints, although some scientists agree that there is a remote possibility that Homo Erectus could be responsible. Others are arguing that the marks have been made through quarrying.
The British-Mexican team plan to publish their supporting evidence for the footprints in January.
